{"id":1928,"date":"2018-04-11T19:50:26","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T00:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/?p=1928"},"modified":"2019-06-13T13:36:40","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T18:36:40","slug":"ibio-institute-announces-winner-of-illinois-biogeneius-challenge-student-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-institute-announces-winner-of-illinois-biogeneius-challenge-student-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"iBIO Institute Announces Winner of \u201cIllinois BioGENEius Challenge\u201d Student Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Winner moves on to compete in the International Competition <\/em><em>this summer for a chance to win a cash prize<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>CHICAGO \u2013 April 11, 2018 \u2013 <\/strong>Today, Haley Martens from Oak Park River Forest High School took first place at the Illinois BioGENEius Challenge, an\u00a0annual student science and research competition hosted by the iBIO Institute EDUCATE Center and sponsored by Horizon Pharma.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Martens was selected from among 26\u00a0Illinois high school students for her research titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biotechinstitute.org\/ul\/posters\/bg2018\/submit\/h0iqeg6X\/62-Illinois-GHC-Haley-Martens-030818-031027.pdf\">The Effect of Ibuprofen on Tail Regeneration in Axolotls<\/a>.\u201d This year, students from across the state submitted projects that researched medical, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology. These projects had to align with one of the three challenge areas: global healthcare, global sustainability or global environment. A number of Horizon employees served as the judges for the competition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1931\" src=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-958x639.jpg 958w, https:\/\/ibio.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/BioGENEius2018-066-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Participants hailed from Oak Park River Forest High School, Lake Forest Academy, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, Niles West High School and York Community High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BioGENEius competition provides students with a unique opportunity to create research that could one day benefit society in a new way,\u201d said Ann Vogel, senior vice president of the iBIO Institute EDUCATE Center. \u201cWe look forward to rooting on Haley in the International Competition taking place in a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martens will go on to represent Illinois in the International BioGENEius Competition on June 4 at the BIO Convention in Boston. The top three competitors will receive cash prizes. The International BioGENEius Competition brings together the best and brightest students from the United States and other countries and is regarded as the most prestigious high school sciences competition in the world for original research in biotechnology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students never cease to amaze us every year with their thought-provoking and well-researched projects,\u201d said Holly Copeland, director of public affairs and corporate social responsibility at Horizon Pharma. \u201cIt\u2019s great to see the passion these students and teachers have for the life sciences.
