As COVID continues to impact our daily lives, it highlights how our life sciences community not only saves lives but also strengthens our economy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This past year its estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2021\/dec\/us-covid-19-vaccination-program-one-year-how-many-deaths-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID vaccines saved more than 1 million lives<\/a>, prevented 10 million hospitalizations and <a href=\"https:\/\/heartlandforward.org\/case-study\/economic-savings-in-america-a-story-of-public-private-partnership-in-rapid-covid-19-vaccine-development-and-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generated economic savings of $438 billion<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33683930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> shows that weekly availability of at home testing (like Abbott BinaxNOW) would avert 2.8 million infections, 15,700 deaths, and save $5.9 billion in healthcare costs and $14 billion in workdays lost.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">While these numbers are just focused on COVID, this is the promise and hope that our industry provides <strong>ALL PATIENTS<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the same time, our community in Illinois has had a significant increase in bioscience venture capital funding in the past year (256%), and nearly one million square feet of Class A lab space either delivered or under construction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our community is poised for explosive growth in Illinois. Check out what we have been up to this past year to support our community:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">In Springfield:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Supported the startup ecosystem by passing legislation creating a <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/governor-pritzker-signs-critical-legislation-for-illinois-startup-companies\/\">SBIR Matching Program in Illinois<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Promoted Health Equity by supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/governor-pritzker-signs-important-legislation-expanding-coverage-for-biomarker-testing\/\">Biomarker Testing Legislation<\/a>, making Illinois the first state to pass comprehensive biomarker legislation requiring all healthcare plans to cover the costs of biomarker testing. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ensured rare Disease patients and their families have a voice in Springfield by extending the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/governor-pritzker-signs-important-legislation-for-rare-disease-patients\/\">Rare Disease Advisory Commission. <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Opposed legislation that would have increased patients out of pocket costs at the pharmacy counter, protected patients from non-medical formulary switching, and protected our medical device industry from harmful legislation requiring warranties. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Joined Governor Pritzker and DCEO Director Garcia to announce the Governor\u2019s $15.4 Million<a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/gov-pritzker-announces-15-4-million-in-rebuild-illinois-capital-funding-to-boost-wet-lab-development\/\"> capital grant program to boost wet lab development<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">In D.C. we participated and hosted roundtables and discussions:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Protecting our industries <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/what-you-need-to-know-us-support-for-an-ip-waiver-and-why-its-a-big-deal\/\">intellectual property rights<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Opposing legislation that would <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/drug-pricing-legislation-will-kill-illinois-startup-bioscience-industry\/\">impose price setting and penalty system for our industry<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">STEM Programming:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Welcomed<strong> 528 campers<\/strong> from <strong>13 different states<\/strong> to explore topics in solubility, chromatography, biometrics, centripetal and centrifugal forces, biomimetics, robotics and gravity at our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/2021-ibio-stemfamily-camp-highlights\/\">STEMfamily Camp<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Addressed the educational gap created by the COVID Pandemic by developing and delivering more than<a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-stem-kit-program-reaches-significant-milestone\/\"><strong> 6,000 iBIO STEMKits<\/strong><\/a> providing Chicagoland students with hands-on STEM Learning activities and connections to STEM careers (<strong>96%<\/strong> of parents surveyed reported that STEMKits had a positive impact on their child\u2019s view of STEM careers). <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In partnership with Goshen Education, we successfully hosted 10, 5-day in-person camps for <strong>1,220 students<\/strong>, primarily <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-educate-and-goshen-education-consulting-receive-significant-grant-from-the-u-s-dept-of-defense-for-innovative-experiential-program\/\">children of active military personnel<\/a>, across the United States.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Community<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In April we partnered with IllinoisVentures and public-private partners in the Life Sciences Ecosystem to host a week-long <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/illinois-most-promising-life-sciences-startups-to-present-at-2021-illinois-life-sciences-showcase\/\">Life Sciences Showcase<\/a> highlighting 12 startup companies and 7 new ecosystem developments. We had more than 400 attendees join us during the virtual showcase. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/news-events\/newsbrief\/\">Daily NewsBrief<\/a> continues to grow and provide daily community and industry news to more than <strong>2,000 industry professionals<\/strong>. Our newsletter has a read rate of over 40% beating industry averages. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">COVID Fund:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">In 2021 iBIO leveraged the COVID Response Fund to support communities in Illinois. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-partners-with-fathers-who-care-and-the-westside-community-stakeholders-to-distribute-7500-masks-to-chicagos-homeless-population\/\">West Side Community Stake Holders<\/a> to provide masks to support underserved communities and the homeless population on the west and southwest side of Chciago. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Partnered with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-and-the-little-village-chamber-of-commerce-partner-to-distribute-10000-masks-to-support-the-little-village-business-community\/\">Little Village Chamber of Commerce<\/a> to provide masks to support the business community in Little Village. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Supported the return to in-school education by providing <a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/ibio-donates-masks-to-cps-and-suburban-schools-to-support-fall-learning\/\">mask donations to CPS schools<\/a> and other school districts in the metro-Chicago region. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Developed multi-lingual communications resource toolkit to combat vaccine hesitancy and partnered with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to distribute the resources and information to the hispanic business community. And deployed the toolkit to Hispanic communities throughout the US. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ibio.org\/zionvaccineclinic\/\">Partnered with Horizon Therapeutics, Lundbeck, Takeda and the Lake County Partners to fund a vaccine clinic to support the underserved community in Zion Illinois<\/a>. This clinic provided 3,000 vaccines to the community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All of this would not have been possible without the support of our members.
