{"id":8499,"date":"2022-10-18T08:05:22","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T13:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/?p=8499"},"modified":"2022-10-18T08:05:22","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T13:05:22","slug":"illinois-biotechnology-innovation-organization-appoints-three-industry-leaders-to-board-of-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/illinois-biotechnology-innovation-organization-appoints-three-industry-leaders-to-board-of-directors\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization Appoints Three Industry Leaders to Board of Directors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><i>Whalen, Jerath and Tennant bring strong business development, M&amp;A and marketing industry expertise<\/i><\/h3>\n<p>The Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization (iBIO), the trade association that represents the 88,000 jobs in <span class=\"xn-location\">Illinois&#8217;<\/span> life sciences sector, today announced the addition of three new members to its board of directors: <b><span class=\"xn-person\">Rahul Jerath<\/span><\/b>, senior director, head of Oncology Business Development &amp; Acquisitions at AbbVie; <b><span class=\"xn-person\">Phil Tennant<\/span><\/b>, senior vice president and head of Oncology Business Unit at Astellas Pharma, Inc.; and <b><span class=\"xn-person\">Joe Whalen<\/span><\/b>, senior vice president, Alliances &amp; International Business Development at Horizon Therapeutics.<br class=\"dnr\" \/><br class=\"dnr\" \/>&#8220;As the <span class=\"xn-location\">Illinois<\/span> life sciences community experiences unprecedented growth, now is a particularly exciting time to leverage the rich experience and insights of Joe, Rahul and Phil,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">John Conrad<\/span>, iBIO president and CEO. &#8220;Each of these new board members brings unique perspectives to our advocacy, community building and education efforts. I look forward to working together as we foster more industry growth in <span class=\"xn-location\">Illinois<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Rahul Jerath<\/span>, AbbVie<br class=\"dnr\" \/><\/b>Jerath has been with AbbVie since 2016. He leads the company&#8217;s M&amp;A search process, which included the Allergan transaction in 2019. Prior to AbbVie, he worked at <span class=\"xn-location\">Baxter<\/span> and the spinout, Baxalta, where he was a senior director of M&amp;A, with prior roles in licensing, search and evaluation. Jerath also worked at Takeda Pharmaceuticals in business development, and prior to that in health care investment banking at Piper Jaffray in <span class=\"xn-location\">San Francisco<\/span>. He has a MS degree in Biotechnology and a BA degree in Biology\/Biochemistry from <span class=\"xn-org\">Northwestern University<\/span>. He completed oncology research at both the Lurie Cancer Center and the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Phil Tennant<\/span>, Astellas Pharma, Inc.<br class=\"dnr\" \/><\/b>Tennant, who has more than 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry,\u00a0 joined Astellas in 2019. As head of the Oncology Business Unit, he is responsible for all commercial activities to support marketed products, Astellas&#8217; co-promotion partners and commercial planning for early-stage oncology development compounds. Within Astellas, Tennant also has served as senior vice president and head of the Oncology Strategic Brand Marketing division and brand general manager for new products in the company&#8217;s oncology franchise. He joined Astellas from Bristol-Myers Squibb and has worked in multiple therapeutic areas across the globe, including <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Europe<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Australia<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>. He also has held leadership roles at AstraZeneca and Merck. Tennant earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics from the <span class=\"xn-org\">University of Warwick<\/span> in the <span class=\"xn-location\">United Kingdom<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Joe Whalen<\/span>, Horizon <br class=\"dnr\" \/><\/b>Whalen has nearly 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, leading and supporting transactions involving licensing, acquisitions and strategic alliances. He was among the first 20 employees when he joined Horizon in 2010. He has led or supported many of Horizon&#8217;s acquisitions since that time, helping to grow Horizon into a publicly traded company with a market capitalization of greater than <span class=\"xn-money\">$15 billion<\/span>, more than 2,000 employees and net sales over <span class=\"xn-money\">$3 billion<\/span> in 2021. Prior to Horizon, he worked at Baxter Healthcare and Searle. Whalen is on the board of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, is a founding member of the Industry Advisory Board of the Harper Cancer Institute at the <span class=\"xn-org\">University of Notre Dame<\/span>, and is on the External Advisory Council at <span class=\"xn-org\">Rosalind Franklin University<\/span>. He earned an MBA from the <span class=\"xn-org\">University of Illinois<\/span> and a bachelor&#8217;s degree in business administration from the <span class=\"xn-org\">University of Notre Dame<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>With the addition of Whalen, Tennant and Jerath, the iBIO board of directors has 21 members.
