{"id":8825,"date":"2023-03-27T06:42:30","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T11:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/?p=8825"},"modified":"2023-03-27T06:42:30","modified_gmt":"2023-03-27T11:42:30","slug":"illinois-biotechnology-innovation-organization-appoints-two-industry-leaders-to-board-of-directors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ibio.org\/illinois-biotechnology-innovation-organization-appoints-two-industry-leaders-to-board-of-directors\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization Appoints Two Industry Leaders to Board of Directors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">The Illinois Biotechnology Innovation Organization (iBIO), the trade association that represents the 91,000 jobs in Illinois\u2019 life sciences sector, today announced the addition of two new members to its board of directors: Eric Messner, Chief <\/span><span class=\"s5\">E<\/span><span class=\"s5\">xecutive<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Officer at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Emalex<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Biosciences and Senior Vice President at Paragon Biosciences; and Jim Sullivan, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Chief Executive Office at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Vanqua<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Bio and Venture Partner at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Orbimed<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">\u201cWe are excited to add industry leaders from two of the most exciting life sciences companies in our community,\u201d said John Conrad, iBIO president and CEO. \u201cEric and Jim bring unique perspectives to our advocacy and community building initiatives. I look forward to working together as we foster more industry growth in Illinois.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Eric Messner is Chief <\/span><span class=\"s5\">E<\/span><span class=\"s5\">xecutive<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Officer at <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Emalex<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Biosciences<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, which is<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> is in late-stage development of a new class of drug for patients with Tourette syndrome and other conditions that have limited treatment options<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. He is also Senior Vice President of Business Development at Paragon Biosciences, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">a <\/span><span class=\"s5\">global life science leader that creates, builds and funds innovative biology-based companies. <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Mr. Messner<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> identifies opportunities, completes due diligence and integrates new products and companies into the Paragon portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Mr. Messner has an extensive, successful career in the biopharmaceutical industry. Formerly, Mr. Messner was CEO of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Anagin<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, and also served as General Manager and Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for OPKO Health. Earlier in his career, he was a founder and Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Operations of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Proventiv<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Therapeutics, which was acquired by <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Cytochroma<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. At <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Cytochroma<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, he was Vice President of Commercial Operations, later Chief Operating Officer and helped lead the sale of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Cytochroma<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> to OPKO Health. Mr. Messner also previously held senior marketing roles at Bone Care International and Abbott Laboratories. Mr. Messner earned his MBA from Northwestern University\u2019s Kellogg School of Management and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Miami University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Dr. Sullivan is co-founder and CEO of <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Vanqua<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. In addition, he has been a Venture Partner with <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Orbimed<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> since January 2019. Previously, he was the Vice President of Research at Abbvie where he was responsible for the company\u2019s research efforts in a variety of therapeutic\/disease areas including oncology, immunology, neurology, hepatitis C and cystic <\/span><span class=\"s5\">fibrosis. Jim has advanced more than 100 compounds into clinical development across a number of disease states and technology platforms. These include products on the market for HCV (<\/span><span class=\"s5\">Mavyret<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Viekira<\/span><span class=\"s5\">), the first-in-class <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Bcl2<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> selective inhibitor, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Venclexta<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, for hematological cancers, a new oral agent for patients with rheumatoid arthritis, RINVOQ, and multiple compounds currently in Phase II or III clinical trials. He has authored\/co-authored more than 130 scientific publications and is an inventor on 11 patents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">Jim is an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University and serves on the board of several companies and foundations including Regis Technologies, Genomics Medicine Ireland, Genuity Science, MATTER Healthcare Incubator, Chicago Biotechnology Accelerator and the Pistoia Alliance. He earned his bachelor\u2019s degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin and conducted post-doctoral research in neurobiology at Northwestern University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s5\">With the addition of Eric Messner and Jim Sullivan, the iBIO board of directors has 24 members.
